Since a couple of years back we started creating a gift concept for Christmas to all Design Communication clients, our friends and family in form of a year calendar. The goal is to stick to the theme of calendars but be as individual and diverse as possible. We started from a rub-off twenty four field card to a poster format with three hundred and sixty five design events to this foldable desk cube that you can hold in your hand and keep yourself reminded of the dates on all six sides.

Orcamp is a complete operation room offering a unique, modern and realistic way of performing individual as well as team surgical training. All devices in the room are realistically sized and shaped, and also resemble reality when it comes to interaction, movements and sounds. The equipment is designed in a unique Orzone identity with a clean and calm expression focusing on ease of use and flexibility.

The design challenge was to create an environment recognizable to professionals yet reducing the number of details to create a perfect mix between an intuitive tool for education and the real life operation room. The unique design creates an ambience never before experienced in the world of surgery. It is a playful blend of geometrical and organic elements based on simple shapes with cut outs to create the functions needed.

Rayzer, the innovative new auxiliary light system for safety and design-conscious drivers, redefines the concept of auxiliary lights and sets a whole new standard for the industry.

Its location inside the car, at optimum height, improves safety and provides better illumination. What’s more, you no longer need to spoil the carefully designed lines of your car by mounting unsightly auxiliary lights on the front.

Rayzer’s unique placement between the rear-view mirror and the windshield provides an elegant solution to the problems traditionally associated with auxiliary lights: awkward installation, risk of theft, and exposure to dirt, stone chips and parking accidents.

The vision of the design process was to give Rayzer a distinctive profile of its own that is still subordinate to the design of the car – to add value to the design without changing it. An upmarket feeling was one of the keywords. We looked for inspiration outside the auto industry, in sectors such as optical precision instruments.

Design Communication – a Swedish design company, which Propeller is part of – asked us to create a marketing pack containing the groups design services and offers for its potential new clients. The DC-group has seven different areas of competence; Medical, Lifestyle, Commercial Vehicles, Motorcycles, Consumer Electronics, Sports and Automotive.

The idea behind the box was to package the services in something that could be thought of as precious little box of candy. The set contains seven leaflets presenting the seven different areas of competence to be found within the DC-group. Each area was given its unique colour-code to distinguish them from each other. By doing that we still maintain an overall distinct identity that makes the story of Design Communication a little more compelling.

Users include broadcasters and United Nations and it can be used for example in disaster relief situations and emergency situations. It is also small enough to be an airline carry-on item. It is built like a tank with protection from sand, dust and water.

The design expresses the modularity of the product as well as it is emphasizing its performance and ruggedness. The user interface is for example recessed in a protected area and the supporting legs rotate out an angle from its protected pocket to create a stable broadcasting position.

The table top autoclave model K5+  has been designed to introduce and establish the Getinge brand in smaller market segments such as dental clinics. An extensive design transformation had to take place in order to reach these new clients. Initially being a stainless steel machine with a technical look, the autoclave underwent an improving conversion to become a modern dental sterilizer station.

Compared to its precursor the K5+ possesses a more user friendly interface as well as more accessible functions. Additionally it has a very competitive design appearance coherent with the Getinge brand.

Through the usage of a new moulding technique, Getinge has succeeded in developing more hygienic, durable and light weighted surfaces. The product development, including involvement of designers eventuated in reduced production costs.

The machine, which is designed for university researchers, medium-sized academic labs and small biotech companies, had to be reliable, flexible, simple to use and intuitive.

In addition, it had to have a small footprint. Surface space in labs – especially those in Japan – is limited, so the machine needed to be compact. The result is a piece of high-tech research equipment with a fresh, modern appearance that is unlike anything else in the lab.

The task was to create a typeface that could be used to support a subtle, yet recognizable, visual differentiation of the two premium brands – SAAB and Cadillac – from the other brands within General Motors. To create a physical manifestation of the typeface Propeller designed a type-specimen book to present the three weights of the typeface and all characters that was drawn. The book shows samples of the typeface combined with images from the lush surroundings of the little municipality of Pixbo outside of Gothenburg in Sweden where SAAB Advanced Design Centre is situated.

Most often you will find the filtration unit of the Cleone water purifier located under the sink and out of sight. Kuna asked us to design a way to build brand awareness by putting the brand in plain sight.

We created the Taste of Purity faucet, which combines grace and practicality. The brushed steel stern is free from knobs or sensors. The only detail is a drop-shaped blue light that lets you know that the purification system is working and alerts you when it is time to change the filters or service the unit.

An additional benefit is that it guides when you get up for a drink in the middle of the night. From a practical perspective, the “Tilt ‘n’ Drink” function makes it easy to use with just one hand. Simply press a glass against the stem and it leans backwards, releasing water. Pull the faucet towards you and the water stays on. Mounting a drinking water faucet used to be a major job that involved working beneath the sink in an awkward space but the Kuna EasyMount Adaptor lets you install the ToP faucet quickly, from the top of the sink. It’s never been easier to have fresh filtered water.

The Open Box is a unique lighting product. When Fagerhult asked us to design a premium luminaire, we found that they are often perceived as merely being heavy, closed and uninspiring units that hang from the ceiling. What we did was to open up the enclosed volume using light, space and harmony.

The result creates an interesting relationship between the outer and inner volumes. The result has a highly functional luminaire that’s suitable for public spaces but also attractive enough for the small office or home.

We came up with racetrack-shaped packaging that fits into a wide variety of store fixtures. Key information is visible from the front, side and top. A system of colors and symbols makes it easy to identify products, styles, and sizes. Fully recyclable and environmentally friendly, the packaging also features a simple, straightforward graphic language that helps consumers choose the kind of base layers they need for their specific sports.

Our inspiration came from the Box House, an iconic piece of Swedish modernist architecture. The justified text layout is based on modernist typography, with the addition of the color gold to add a contemporary twist. The poster was sent to selected architects, city planners, students and professors around the world.

We joined the family of the inventor at a barbecue at his home to take photographs of the product in action. These images were used in a brochure to be given away at outlets selling the device.

We also created packaging that uses bold typography, stark images and distinctive colors. The warm red is a signature color that can be used across a wider range of Looftlighter items. This two-track approach – emotional photography combined with a bold graphic expression – shapes the personality of the product.

Working with Richard Looft, innovator of the Looftlighter, our task was to come up with a design and, in parallel, create a premium brand to support future products. The design flirts with the traditional masculine tonality of the American barbecue but adds a sleek modern design expression that’s more appealing to contemporary family life. With the Looftlighter, Propeller created an entirely new product that’s both fun and kinder to the environment.

To kick start sales, we designed a series of brochures and leaflets, as well as accompanying websites. We used digital renderings to bring Lekbo and Hjulbo to life and visualize the products. These illustrations not only created a strong character, but are a powerful tool that can be used to expand the product family as they offer an attractive preview of reality.

We worked with glass and aluminum to create slender frames and a light feel. But we also included a range of practical details for long-term functionality. These include easy-to-clean cast marble floor panels that hide drains, a shelf for shampoo and soap, and a handy hook for towels. We also chose to include wood in the design to provide a feeling of quality and serenity, and to connect the shower to Svedbergs’ other bathroom products for a harmonious user experience.

In addition to being ergonomic and robust, an important goal of the design of the S6 surveying instrument was visibility. This is a product that will be used in places bustling with activity, such as construction sites, tunnels and forest terrain. The design had to strengthen the Trimble brand but also communicate high-tech precision and innovation.

To achieve this, we used a combination of form and finishing details. Sensitive optic equipment is protected by the alidade and bright yellow bumper. This bumper encircles the gray inner-body and continues on to the handle that can be removed for easier vertical measuring. The color is not only visible from a distance, which improves safety and makes it easier to find, but also makes a recognizable statement. The yellow bumper is a recurring element in other Trimble products.

Airpod is a high-efficiency air filter that uses 85% less energy than its competitors and costs less to run than a single light bulb. Like every Blueair product, the Airpod pushes the limits of eco-friendly design. By using the actual filter as its main component, it requires 60% less material than other filters. And all the components, including the packaging, are fully recyclable.

The product created an entirely new segment in the air-purifier market. We stripped the design back to the essentials: the filter and docking station. Most air purifiers hide the filters, but the Airpod gives its patented HEPA silent filter full-exposure. The patterns on the filter give it a chameleon-like quality, so it can blend in or stand out. The square docking station houses a fan that revolves so silently you may wonder if your Airpod is turned on.

As a result, the Exposure is an unexpected fusion of modern esthetics and classic style, complete with understated precision, leather straps and chrome casing. It’s simple and subtle yet daring, using a range of bright colors that only appear in the details. For everyday use, or special occasions – it bridges the gap between sneakers and suits.

We used high-tech materials, such as a carbon-fiber composite frame, to achieve a notable reduction in weight and improve weight distribution, strength, stability and flexibility.

The Linear Rebel One breaks new ground, and optimizes ergonomics, price and performance. The materials shaped the character of the design to create a memorable, iconic product in an otherwise conservative business segment.
The challenge was to design a product for a trend- and design-conscious consumer who wants to explore the full potential of their broadband connection and plasma/LCD TV. Instead of imitating the appearance of traditional consumer electronics, the design and materials used give the product a sculptured appearance which enhances any living environment. Because it measures just 27×23x10cm, Kapsel can be positioned horizontally or vertically, or wall-mounted.

Imagine an electronic display that can hold newspapers, magazines, books and personal notes – and that you can fold up and put in your back pocket. That’s Newsboy, a conceptual project for which Propeller designed the hardware, services and interfaces. We also shot a series of short films showing how the product could be used from day-to-day.

We envisioned a display that’s thin, flexible and almost weightless, and that feels friendly and non-technical. The graphic expression is clean and light, and you can skim through it just like a regular newspaper. But with Newsboy, you can also adjust the size of the content, surf the Internet and use email. Subscriptions can be tailored to suit your interests – taking world news from one paper, economic news from another, local news from a third, and adding in-depth articles or extra photos.

When ABB contacted Propeller to design it, they already knew the geometry, production method and materials needed to create the robot. The challenge we faced was how to use those parameters to create a machine that expresses the ABB brand.

We had already designed several other robots for ABB, so we knew the IRB660 had to fit in with them. Only this robot had more complex shapes and a very technical appearance. So we worked on smoothing out its lines, and on creating a feeling of high-level optimization and robustness. The result is a robot that communicates speed and strength, and that matches the rest of the ABB family.

The goal of this project was to simplify the user-experience and make the phone more user friendly. The resulting interface suits users who just want a traditional phone, as well as those who prefer to explore more advanced options.

The menu driven interface is built around a large LCD display in combination with soft keys and number keypad. Buttons and graphical user interface is designed to be easy to read in both wall mounted and desk stand version. The interface menu structure with contextual based option menus enables scalability of the operator’s services without intruding the basic phone functionality. With the new L series for Silva our goal was to package the world’s brightest LED into the smallest, lightest design. On top of that, it had to be comfortable, easy to use and attractive.

We created a headlamp with a unique single-joint construction for easier one-handed adjustments. It also has a soft rubber panel to protect the forehead, smaller battery packs for better balance, as well as a slimmer form. The colors range from sober white to adventurous orange, which together with the strong graphic identity creates a modern design that strengthens Silva’s brand and increases sales.

We worked with this international lock company to develop a cohesive design language for their extensive series of products and technologies. The aim was to find a solution that communicates their brand, resists short-lived trends, and appeals to a wide range of target groups.

The result pays homage to Yale’s three most common shapes of key bows (the portion of the key that you hold when turning it). It’s also flexible; it was created with new products and lock suit different target groups, while still projecting a strong, easily recognized image. So whether it’s used with traditional locks or biometrics, Yale now has a clear design program that references the brand history without losing sight of the future.

Ihreborn has a long history of making and upholstering sofas. Our task was to design a sofa and table that reflects their values and sense of craftsmanship in a contemporary manner.

The Satellite sofa has armrests that can be detached to be used as extra seats. This takes the three-seater sofa and turns it into a seating solution with space for up to eight people. The bentwood table can be made using oak or walnut, and has storage space for magazines and books.
